Photo Essay: Surfing on the North Shore Oahu

March 13, 2013 by Caroline Eaton 2 Comments

The North Shore of Oahu is a super laid-back and relaxing escape from the busy city of Waikiki. It gained its reputation for world-class surfing at Bonzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach with waves known to reach 30+ feet. These 7 miles of beaches mean business, if you aren’t an expert surfer I would surf with caution! The shallow reef and roaring waves could be a deadly mix.

The best time of the year to visit the North Shore is November – February. If you visit in December you could catch one of the 3 biggest surfing competitions in the world which make up the Triple Crown of Surfing.

Since I had only attempted to surf twice in my life, I decided to sit this one out and watch from the sideline. Even the expert surfers were taking dives into the raging waves.

Despite my embarrassment, I will share my best photo at learning to surf on Kauai. This was as far up as I got for the camera!

Waves that reach 30 ft? That is awesome! I should really start learning how to swim right now.

By the way, are there no sharks in that beach? I’m just curious. 🙂

There probably are sharks but none that bothered us!
