Rules Of The Road: Road Trip Guidelines

roadtrip usa

Today Josh and I are venturing down south.

The majority of my extended family lives in Georgia and I think it’s about time to introduce Josh to a little southern hospitality. He needs to understand on a deeper level my love of really good BBQ, fried okra and grits.

roadtrip usa

We are roadtripping down from the midwest to visit one of my favorite friends in South Carolina, then on to see family in Atlanta, Savannah and then down the coast of Florida until we reach Key West!

Before we leave I’ve listed out our rules of the road, what I think makes a successful road trip and leaves everyone in the car happy!

  1. The driver gets to control the radio and the volume of the music
  2. Only one bathroom break per 4 hours
  3. If you can’t keep to rule #2, no drinks for you!
  4. The navigator isn’t allowed to sleep, whomever is sitting in the front seat next to the driver has one job, to keep the driver awake and alert
  5. Snacks. Lots of them. Make sure to include food you would never eat on a regular basis (ex. cheesy poofs, beef sticks and lots of slushies)
  6. Car games can be fun, but should never be forced on other road trippers
  7. If you can find all 50 state license plates during your roadtrip…you are awesome
  8. Everything on the trip should be split. Driving, gas money, music choices
  9. Caffeine. Lots of it.
  10. Know your strengths. If you’re a good city driver, then offer to drive through the traffic. If you aren’t a morning person, then don’t offer to drive in the early AM.
  11. Fast Food Drive Thru’s are inevitable on roadtrips, but there is no reason you should ever have to drive thru a Burger King, White Castle or Jack In the Box. :)

These are my rules – what are yours?

Hotel + Boat = Boatel: Toronto’s Most Unique Bed and Breakfast

boatel toronto hotel

When you can’t decide if you want to cruise on a boat or stay in a hotel for the weekend, the Boatel has the perfect solution! We were in Toronto for TBEX and found ourselves sleeping on the water with Diane and Ted of the only Boatel in Toronto and one of the most unique bed and breakfasts we have stayed in yet!

boatel in Toronto

Captain Ted and Diane, our great hosts!

Their Story:

…was much like our own. They decided to risk leaving the 9 – 5 for making a life on their boat and welcoming guests along for their adventure. They spend the summers in Toronto serving guests from around the world, and they travel to the Bahamas in the winter for their own vacation escape. Diane is always busy around the boat, a cheerful face everytime you return home and Ted is captain of one of the local cruise ships – if you’re lucky you will see him dressed in his stripes!

The Goal:

To have people arrive as strangers and leave as friends.

This was what stood out to us the most.

The first morning Josh and I woke up and rushed around our cabin getting ready for the first day of TBEX. Relaxed was not the word I would use to describe our demeanor that first morning. We went upstairs for breakfast outside overlooking the marina, and Diane and Ted sat down with us as we ate and chatted together over some of the most delicious whole-wheat banana flaxseed pancakes I have ever tasted.

This became our morning routine for 4 days. We would wake up, sit down and eat breakfast getting to know Ted and Diane more and more each morning. Little did they know that we were setting our breakfast time 15 min earlier than we needed, because we found this morning time so relaxing and them as a couple so intriguing!

It happened. We came as strangers and left as friends…goal accomplished!

The Boatel:

I love unique bed and breakfasts. I will search harder to find a hotel with personality or a fun story behind it if I can. I still don’t know how I came across the boatel, but it was definitely worth the extra time Googling.

The interior is beautiful mahogany, the rooms are cozy and just enough for a comfortable nights sleep. What I loved most is the three levels available to relax on. Whether you are drinking your coffee on the lower level chairs watching sunrise, or sunning on the top deck, the view is awesome of both the city and the waterfront.

Toronto, Ontario

The City:

Toronto is awesome. Coming from Chicago, it reminded me a lot of my favorite US city! We were out every night at various events and the boatel was an easy and safe walk home. I highly suggest taking The Beer Lover’s tour in the city, it is amazing the connection between the history of Toronto and craft breweries. The architecture is stunning. Also, if you love improv comedy, The Second City has a sister location in Toronto and it is a great evening of laughs!

I will warn you Toronto is known for it’s continual construction you will see everywhere. Big cranes and roads are blocked as you try to navigate the growing city. An easy solution is to explore on foot, bike or use the public transit.

Photo Essay: Galapagos Sea Lions

The Galapagos Islands are known for their vast wildlife, both under sea and on land. The National Park has done an incredible job of preserving these islands and a vacation here is a treat for all ages, families and activity levels to visit. You can enjoy a luxury cruise for a week, where everything will be planned out for you, or stay on one of the islands in a local bed and breakfast and adventure out on day trips to the different islands.

No matter where you go, or how you choose to vacation one thing will always be true, the Galapagos Sea Lions will be everywhere. We quickly fell in love with the massive, loud, lovable animals! Here is a photo essay of a few places you will find them!

They will be sleeping EVERYWHERE!

When you hear them talk to each other it sounds like the morning after a big fraternity party – a chorus of people throwing up. Don’t believe me? Go visit for yourself!

Good luck finding an open bench, it’s one of their favorite lounging spots.

Our favorite memories surround snorkeling with the sea lions. They are the most playful animals we have ever been around!

5 Essentials for Healthy Travel

Why is it so hard to maintain our normal fitness and nutrition routines when we start traveling? It’s something nearly every traveler struggles with even if you’re just heading out for a week of vacation. There will always be a destination to explore, a new food to try, or maybe just the desire to relax and do nothing.

While difficult, it is possible to continue a healthy lifestyle while you’re on the road. Read on for my 5 essentials for healthy travel:

1. Water

I would argue the number one problem when we travel is dehydration. Most of us don’t drink enough water on a normal basis, so throw in travel days, questionably potable water, and lack of accessible bathrooms leads us to drink even less water.

Carry around a water bottle EVERYWHERE! Get into the habit of constantly drinking and refilling and drinking more. Your energy level will continue to improve and your body will start to crave it.

My favorite water bottle for travel is the Platypus:

water bottle for travelers

It’s collapsible, so when you’re finished drinking you can just roll it up and put it in your bag. It weighs nothing and is reusable so you aren’t adding to the plastic waste in each country (if you have access to safe drinking water to refill). Josh thought this was an unnecessary purchase but after a few months of travel, he wished he had one of his own!

2. Fruit

I never leave home without fruit. It’s the perfect snack and an essential to have around for emergencies. Apples and bananas are two examples of easy ways to keep a nutritious snack in your bag when hunger hits. You can pick up fruit at any market around the world at a relatively cheap price. If you plan ahead, there is no excuse for eating crap food because you are “starving”.

If your experience with fruit doesn’t go beyond “whatever is on sale at the grocery store” or a processed fruit cup, you’re in for a treat in Southeast Asia or South America. Do not miss the abundance of fruit available at the markets!

3. Tennis Shoes

If you don’t have them with you, you won’t work out. Always travel with your tennis shoes and don’t let them gather dust in your backpack. The easiest and cheapest form of exercise is tying up your tennis shoes and exploring the great outdoors. The best way to see a city is always on foot! If you aren’t already a runner, start slow and go for long walks. Slowly start increasing your speed and push yourself to get your heart working harder each time.

Even if you’re not going to run, walk everywhere. We usually made it our personal challenge to avoid taking transportation at all cost. Sometimes you can’t avoid taking a train or bus, but I can count on two hands the number of times we had to take a taxi on our trip, walking gets you exercise, exploration and fun!

4. Sleep

Changing time zones, red-eye flights and noisy hotels will leave you drained and exhausted without sleep. If you don’t shut down and get some beauty sleep you will be cranky and irritated. Coffee is not the solution and Red Bull will just make it worse. Sleep is essential for all travelers to have the energy to explore, patience to engage the culture and keep your body functioning at its best.

healthy travel for travelers

5. Determination

If you aren’t determined, temptation will win every time. You can read “healthy travel tips” and gather up the best gear and food suggestions in your backpack, but at the end of the day if you aren’t determined to live healthy, none of it matters. A healthy routine is defined by you. I could guess that you already know the right foods to avoid and how to portion your meals out, you simply aren’t doing it. When you travel you have to be more determined than ever to succeed.

In conclusion?

Drink water.

Eat fruit.

Pack your tennis shoes.

Get sleep.

Be Determined.

50 Shades of Red – A Glass of Wine a Day for 50 Days

Finally! 50 days later I am answering your questions! What the heck is this #50ShadesofRed and all the wine I’m seeing take over Traveling 9 to 5′s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook?!

If you follow our travels you know two things:

1. I love wine.

2. We’ve been housesitting for the past 3 months in Northern California.

The story behind 50 Shades of Red starts with this view:

GV

This was our view from the porch. We had 50 days until we flew to Toronto (for #TBEX), and before we left we committed to slowing down our pace for an hour a day to enjoy the view of the unbelievable location we were at!

Yes, you will see a few white wines mixed in, on the hot days I was craving a crisp white vs. a rich cabernet. Josh and I had fun with it – it was our way to relax at the end of the day and look forward to the hour when the world stopped and him and I could just sit on our porch … happy.

The Ultimate Guide to Riding the Megabus

megabus.kayak

What is the Megabus?

The Megabus is a intercity double decker coach bus service that is low cost and in my opinion incredibly more comfortable than the alternative, Greyhound Bus. The bus offers free Wi-Fi (that usually doesn’t work) and electric plugs at your seat. They stop in over 100 U.S cities, including routes through Canada.

Where does the Megabus travel to?

Screen Shot 2013-05-26 at 11.17.29 AM

Check out the route map on the site to find out where the closest stop is to you.

Do I need a ticket for the Megabus?

Once you’ve selected your dates and times, entered your information and purchased your ticket, make sure to save it or print it out. You will need the ticket or at least the confirmation number to board. I usually send it to TripIt, or save it in a note on my phone. The driver is going to ask you to read the first 5 numbers/characters of the confirmation number, so make sure you have it accessible.

You can change your ticket for a $1 fee. (50 cent change fee and 50 cent new reservation fee)

How to get the best seat on the Megabus

Travel light and show up early. I suggest arriving 15 minutes early, we’ve never taken a megabus that doesn’t leave at least 30 minutes late. When the bus first arrives, passengers with carry-on only bags rush to the bus door to await boarding. If you have luggage to load that doesn’t fit in your lap, join the line in the back of the bus.

Each passenger is allowed one piece of luggage and one carry on. (I’ve never seen them be too strict on this but I’m sure it depends on how busy the bus is that day.)

If you are traveling with someone else, I suggest splitting up. Josh takes our big bags to put in the back of the bus, while I get in the front of the line to be one of the first to grab a seat. You do need your ticket to get on so when I board I show the driver my ticket for 2 people and explain my husband is putting his bag on. When Josh gets on he knows his ticket number and reiterates that to the driver. We’ve never had trouble with this and we’ve always gotten the seat we want. Make sure both of you have the ticket numbers because they do occasionally ask for it when putting your bag on also if you’re carrying more than one bag.

There are two levels of seating on most Megabuses. Personally I prefer the bottom level, the seats seem to have much more space, the ceilings are higher and if you get carsick, the swaying is more forgiving on the bottom. You have the choice to have a table on the bottom or a regular seat. Be aware if you do pick the table you might end up playing footsie with your stranger-neighbor across from you. If you go too far back in the bus you are sitting near the bathroom and it could end up being a smelly trip. However, the far back left seats on the first level have the most leg room.

I suggest skipping the table seats and sitting 1 or 2 seats back, in between the bathroom and the table seats.

Why should I care what seat I get?

Before we started strategically boarding the Megabus we had AWFUL bus trips. Especially during the holidays these buses get incredibly crowded and if you are stuck upstairs it can get very … sweaty, stuffy and vomit-acious. We might sound crazy, but when you become a regular on the Chicago – Indianapolis Megabus route you begin to figure out how make the trip a positive experience.

Tips for Surviving the Megabus

Lower your expectations.

I never show up for a megabus expecting it to leave on time, the wi-fi to actually work or the person sitting in front of me to not talk loudly into their cell phone. There is always something that drives me nuts, but by lowering my expectations, I can handle the trip.

Come prepared for the weather

The megabus stops are outside and not usually accommodating to weather. We have stood outside in the pouring rain and below freezing temperatures waiting hours for the bus to arrive. If it might rain bring an umbrella or poncho, if it’s winter wear extra layers. The worse the weather, the later the megabus is and waiting outside in the extremes doesn’t make the next 3-5 hour bus trip ahead of you any more enjoyable.

Bring headphones or ear plugs

I’ve never understood why people feel it is their right to talk loudly in small enclosed places like buses. Every bus trip includes at least one long phone call with screaming involved, someone listening to their music loud enough for all to hear or a conversation on evolution between two strangers who are suddenly best friends. Come prepared with something to listen to or block out the noise you will thank me later.

Have your charger with you

The electrical plug at your seat is a huge plus for the Megabus. You can watch movies on your laptop and listen to music on your phone without fear of your battery dying.

Hopefully this tips will help you on your next Megabus trip. We’ve taken it so many times, we want to help you have a comfortable trip.

What tips do you have for riding Megabus?

What is Your Goal at TBEX?

This post is directed at fellow travelers attending TBEX. If you aren’t attending TBEX, you can apply the same thought process to any conference you are attending this year – be prepared and go with goals!

Join me at TBEX

Why did you sign up for TBEX?

Did you sign up with a goal or do you just really love Toronto and want an excuse to visit?

Either way, the weekend is yours to do what you want with the time. TBEX is a chance for travel writers, bloggers, photographers to connect with PR agencies, travel bureaus, travel products and build relationships with the travel community.

C’est Christine recently wrote about why she is not going to TBEX and I respect her post a lot considering I think a lot of people are going with no idea why.

I realized I don’t want to be a full-time travel writer or professional travel blogger; I don’t want my travel to be solely confined to press trips and sponsored trips (although I certainly don’t mind one every once in a while!)…

But when it comes down to it, it’s not the right fit for me anymore. I’d rather stay in New York and have a birthday picnic with all of my friends in the city. – C’est Christine

We have two weeks until TBEX Toronto 2013 is upon us. Take the next two weeks to research who is going to be there and who you want to meet. What other travel bloggers do you want to put some face time in with to maybe partner in the future. Is there a travel bureau that will be there that you have a creative idea to pitch? Take time to get your ideas planned out and pitches ready.

Screen Shot 2013-05-22 at 6.14.44 PM

So…back to my first question, why are you going to TBEX?

Network with other travel bloggers

You participate in weekly chats and spend hours talking to @ signs with # hashtags at the end of your tweet. It’s time to put a face to the twitter handle and meet some of these bloggers.

If this is your first time meeting other travel bloggers face to face it might be strange at first. You are meeting someone who you have read about online, and you probably know more about them then some of their closest friends. Don’t be surprised when some of these strangers you meet at TBEX quickly become some of your closest long-term relationships.

Build Long-Term Relationships with Travel companies

The sponsors and travel companies aren’t only participating in the conference and purchasing a table during speed dating to meet the perfect blogger to hand over a free press trip to. They want to find travelers and writers that want to work with them. They want to begin build relationships and meet creative people who want to do creative things.

Come to TBEX prepared with ideas. You know your strengths, get creative and leverage those to make yourself stand out and be sought after by the different companies.

Learn how to improve your blog.

Beyond networking, TBEX offers a lot of great keynote speakers, break out sessions and knowledge surrounding how to build a successful business and blog. If this is your goal hopefully you are signed up for the writing course in the beginning of the week, and have already targeted certain bloggers you can reach out to and find a mentor.

Take advantage of the wealth of experience that will be at the conference. Instead of firing off every question you’ve ever had, pick your 5 most important and spend time getting a really good answer on those few.

See Toronto.

Maybe TBEX is your excuse to finally make it to Canada. You plan on going to the evening parties, but you most likely will skip the day sessions so you can go out exploring Toronto. I’m sure you won’t be the only one with this goal, send out a tweet and set up a meeting point to explore together.

What did I miss? What’s your goal at the TBEX conference?

Tweet me @traveling9to5 if you want to connect in Toronto!
